Spring is in full swing! It’s the time of year where we get to open our windows, enjoy the fresh breeze, and spend time outside without our toes going numb. One popular activity that comes with the Spring season is planting! Unfortunately, those of us renting probably don’t have the ability to plant a bed of flowers or a plentiful vegetable garden. Have no fear, Mills Property is here to provide you with a list of plants that will flourish from the comfort of your apartment’s window sill.
Herbs
Growing fresh herbs doesn’t take up a lot of space, and many are presently fragrant. Basil, cilantro, parsley, mint & chives are all fantastic options if you enjoy cooking with herbs. Most herbs are simple to grow. Just place them in a sunny spot in your apartment & remember to water them regularly.
Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is a simple plant to grow indoors! It’s part of the succulent family & known for its pain-relieving properties. Aloe thrives in bright, indirect sunlight and temps between 55-80 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the perfect addition to an end table or book shelf. You will need to water your aloe vera plant once every three weeks and even less during the winter months.
Jade
A Jade plant (aka money plant) retains water in its round shaped leaves, so it can sometimes survive months at a time without any attention. You will want to make sure that this plant is placed near a sunny window and water when its soil feels dry to the touch. Fun fact: the root of jade plants is a staple in the diet of African tribes.
Peace Lily
The peace lily prefers warm & humid conditions, but it can still thrive in any home as long as you don’t place it near a drafty area or in a room that remains unheated for an extended period of time. The flowers of a peace lily are its most striking feature. The flowers are the long, thin white panicle that is encased by a white leaf. When first sprouted, this leaf will start off as bright white, but as your peace lily ages, the color will fade to yellow or green.
Snake Plant
Taking care of this indoor plant is about as easy as it gets! Also known as mother-in-law’s tongue, the snake plant has long, thin, crinkled leaves that grow upright. Some varieties have white or yellow edges. This plant also has a small white flower that blooms very rarely. This unique house plant thrives in a wide range of lighting conditions. The air should be somewhat dry, and so should the soil. The average room temperature is perfect for this plant.
